SUMMARY:GES Spring Colloquium speaker series
DESCRIPTION:Topic: Freshwater biology and biogeochemistry\n\n\n\nCarbon from the Upside Down: How Ecosystem Ecology Questions the Spatiotemporal Extent of Streams\n\n\n\nSpeaker: Amanda DelVecchia\, UNC Geography and Environment\n\n\n\nStreams are broadly conceptualized as well-oxygenated\, flowing waters with life sustained by modern photosynthesis. In the past decade\, evidence of methane presence and contributions to stream processes has caused us to question this paradigm. Methane is produced in conditions without oxygen and it can be cycled through food webs\, transported downstream\, or released to the atmosphere as a potent greenhouse gas. \n\n\n\nIn this talk I will discuss our work on how methane\, tied to the dark anoxic regions of streams\, has caused us to reconsider the extent of what constitutes a stream ecosystem. We will discuss two primary topics: how the dark and anoxic regions of streams can support stream food webs (including Bristol Bay salmon)\, and where these regions might occur and be relevant to stream carbon cycling. \n\n\n\nThis event is free and open to the public. For disability accomodations\, contact mlreaga2@uncg.edu / 336.334.5388 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAmanda DelVecchia\n\n\n\nDepartment of Geography and Environment\, UNC Chapel Hill

SUMMARY:Fall 2025 Colloquium Series: Research as principled engagement
DESCRIPTION:Graham Building\, Room 106 \n\n\n\n\n\n\nFall 2025 Colloquium Series\n\n\n\nResearch as principled engagement: Reflections on two decades of participatory action research on tourism microentrepreneurship\n\n\n\nIn this presentation\, Duarte B. Morais of NC State University reviews two decades of scholarship grounded in reciprocal collaboration with tourism microentrepreneurs and destination communities. The People-First Tourism Lab at NC State University has developed and adapted a participatory methodology that integrates critical pedagogy\, mixed methods\, and social entrepreneurship to examine the under-studied domain of tourism microentrepreneurship and to foster endogenous community development. \n\n\n\nMorais will summarize key findings from this body of work concerning tourism microentrepreneurs’ motivations\, self-determination\, social capital\, and self-representation. The presentation concludes with an invitation to reflect on how scholar–practitioner–activists can influence knowledge creation and instigate\, through their practice\, transformative change toward a more equitable world. \n\n\n\nThis event is free and open to the public. SUMMARY:Spring 2025 Colloquium
DESCRIPTION:Illegalities from Above and Below: Making a City for Contraband in the Paraguay-Brazil Borderlands\n\n\n\n\n\nThursday\, March 6 @ 3:30 p.m. in Graham 106\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOutlaw Capital (University of Georgia Press\, 2023) shows how transgressive economies and gray spaces are central to globalized capitalism. With an enthography of the largest contraband economy in the Americas running through Ciudad del Este\, Paraguay\, Outlaw Capital shows how conflicts over everyday illegalities shape urban development. By studying the differential treatment of ‘elite illegalities’ and the ‘street illegalities’ of street vendors\, Outlaw Capital shows how racialized narratives of economic legitimacy across scales – not legal compliance – sort whose activities count as formal and legal\, and whose are targeted for reform or expulsion. Ultimately\, reforms criminalized the popular economy while legalizing\, protecting\, and ‘whitening’ elite illegalities. \n\n\n\nThis event is free and open to the public.
