Avery’s research interests include dendroclimatology and biogeography. Her dissertation research emphasizes the use of tree species with varying temporal responses to soil moisture for dendroclimatic reconstructions in the Piedmont Mountain Ranges of North Carolina. Her work has been published in numerous journals, including Environmental Research: Climate and the International Journal Biometeorology.
