Posted on December 10, 2024
Congratulations to Dr. Tyler Mitchell on receiving his PhD! Tyler’s dissertation, Radial growth responses of four southeastern USA pine species to precipitation event types, intense rainfall, and the North Atlantic Subtropical High, addresses the importance of rainfall delivery, particularly how intense events are critically important for tree growth and in what way long-term changes in rainfall intensity may alter competitive interactions between tree species.
Tyler began his graduate studies at UNCG in 2017, receiving his MA degree in 2019 and completing his dissertation in the fall semester of 2024. During this period, Tyler authored 15 peer-reviewed publications—seven as first author— in the fields of dendrochronology and climatology. Tyler received multiple awards including the Best Master’s Paper Award at the 2018 SEDAAG Conference, and the Lewis Teaching, Gordon Bennett, and the Outstanding Research Awards from the Department. From 2019–2023 Tyler served as an editorial assistant for Southeastern Geographer, the flagship journal of SEDAAG. Beginning in 2025, Tyler will be a Post-Doc at the University of Wyoming in the Ecosystem Science and Management Department. Great work, Tyler!
