On Thursday, May 4th, faculty, staff, and friends of the Department of Geography came together for a reception to mark the upcoming retirements of two professors.
Dr. Michael Lewis came to UNCG in 1988 from the University of Oklahoma, where he received his Ph.D. He was promoted to associate professor with tenure in 1995. Dr. Lewis has conducted research and taught courses in the areas of natural resource management and applied physical geography. He has led the Department’s popular summer field course numerous times during his career.
Dr. Elisabeth Nelson came to UNCG as an assistant professor in 1999 after spending four years at San Diego State University. Her Ph.D. is from the University of South Carolina. Dr. Nelson taught and conducted research in the areas of cognitive and perceptual cartography, map design, and GIS. She played a critical role in shaping the Department’s graduate programs as director of graduate studies for two terms as the Ph.D. program was being launched.
While the Department will sorely miss the contributions of these two scholar-teachers, we are very grateful for their years of service and wish them all the best in their well earned retirements.
